Your Professional Ship Simulator Journey

Six steps that take you from a first cold start to running heavy commercial commands in open water.

Explore Professional Ship Simulator Guides

Ten content areas covering everything from your first cold start to modding your own scenarios — pick the one you need and start reading.

Professional Ship Simulator Beginner Guides

New captains start here. These guides walk through the clickable cockpit, the cold-and-dark start-up procedure, view modes, the tutorial flow and the harbour etiquette that keeps your first berthing from ending in a dented hull.

Start Reading
1

Learn the cockpit: switch between bridge, wing control station and external views, and understand which panel controls what before you touch the telegraph.

2

Cold start a vessel: battery, generator, power supply and engine start-up order, plus the ENIS checks that confirm the ship is actually ready to move.

3

Run the tutorial missions: guided mini-missions teach steering, speed control, radio use and simple docking without mission pressure.

4

Master the fundamentals: propeller wheel effect, bank effect near quay walls, wind drift, current drift and how to use tug support before it is too late.

5

Graduate to independent sailing: plan a short route, read seamarks and navigation lights, set the autopilot and handle your first solo berthing.

Professional Ship Simulator Career Mode & Licences

Career mode is the long game: you begin as a small harbour operator with one boat and work up to professional captain through missions, XP, credits and licence tiers.

Career Guide
1

Start small: one service vessel in a minor harbour, earning credits from tutorials and entry-level missions.

2

Bank credits and XP: mission payouts scale with difficulty, weather and the precision of your handling.

3

Earn licences: qualification tiers gate the bigger hulls and the better-paying contracts.

4

Expand the fleet: buy additional vessels so you can match the right ship to each mission type.

5

Reach professional captain: run heavy commercial commands on demanding routes in poor weather.

6

Use fast travel wisely: reposition between regions without losing the progression you have banked.

Professional Ship Simulator Controls & Setup

With over 50 assignable buttons, nine axes and a triple-layer keyboard layout, the sim expects real hardware. These guides cover input setup, controller support and performance tuning.

Setup Guide
1

Pick your input: keyboard, gamepad, joystick or a full throttle and wheel setup, and understand the trade-offs.

2

Map the essentials: rudder, telegraph, thrusters, bow thruster, horn and view cycling on controls you can reach without looking.

3

Learn the triple-layer keyboard layout so you can reach secondary panels without leaving the bridge view.

4

Configure the clickable cockpit: mouse interaction, panel pinning and the docking panel workflow.

5

Tune performance: graphics settings, frame-rate limits and the options that matter most on mid-range hardware.

What is Professional Ship Simulator?

Professional Ship Simulator is a large-scale maritime simulation from German studio SWE Systems, published by Aerosoft and entering Steam Early Access on 16 September 2026. It began life as Nautic XP and was renamed in April 2026 when it shifted toward a stricter, systems-driven interpretation of ship handling rather than an arcade-friendly one.

Real Hydrodynamics

Propeller wheel effect, bank and squat, wind and current drift, anchor drag and mooring lines that snap when tension climbs too high.

Clickable Bridge

A fully interactive console: simulated power generation, ENIS readouts, radar with AIS and CPA, sonar, VHF radio and damage control.

Real Charts & Harbours

Two regions built from real height and depth data, more than 40 harbours and thousands of authentic seamarks and navigation lights.

Mods & Scenario Editor

Custom ships, scenarios and scenery arrive with Workshop support, alongside a tile-based map system designed to grow after launch.

Instead of cutting corners, the sim models the forces that make real berthing genuinely difficult: propeller wheel effect, bank and squat effects, wind and current drift, anchor behaviour and mooring or tow lines that part when tension climbs too high. On the bridge you operate simulated power generation and transmission, radar with AIS and CPA, sonar, VHF radio and a fully clickable cockpit, while hull damage and flooding turn a bad approach into an emergency.

Harbours & Sailing Regions

Both launch regions are reconstructed from real height and depth data, so approaches, shoals and channel widths behave the way the charts say they should.

Career, Scenario & Open World

The sim offers three ways to sail: a progression-driven career, fixed scenarios for practising specific manoeuvres, and open water where nothing is timed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Professional Ship Simulator beginner friendly?+

It is approachable rather than easy. The sim ships with tutorials and a set of scenario missions that teach steering, speed control and simple docking without mission pressure, and the smaller hulls are genuinely forgiving. What it does not do is hide the physics: wind, current and bank effect will still move you. Start with the tutorial missions and a tugboat before you accept commercial contracts.

How realistic is the ship handling?+

Realism is the point of the project. The developers model propeller wheel effect, bank and squat effects, wind and current drift, anchor behaviour and mooring line tension, and the maps are built from real height and depth data. Expectations should still be calibrated: this is a study-level simulator from a small studio, not a certified training device, and some systems are simplified for playability.

Which ship should I start with?+

Start with the tugboat or the pilot boat. Both are short, slow and predictable, which makes them ideal for learning line handling, close-quarters manoeuvring and how the telegraph responds. Moving up to a container ship or bulk carrier too early is the most common way new captains get frustrated, because stopping distances and bank effect scale with displacement.

How much does the game cost?+

The developers have said the price will stay stable through Early Access, with a possible adjustment when the full version ships. A concrete figure had not been published at the time of writing, so treat any number you see quoted elsewhere with suspicion and check the Steam store page before you buy.

What is included at Early Access launch?+

At launch the sim includes two large scenery regions built from real survey data, the detailed physics model, the clickable bridge systems, initial scenarios and tutorials, and the official store page lists eight mission types and nine ship classes. More ships, missions, real-world inspired scenarios and improved tutorials are planned before the full release, which the developers target for around mid-2027.

Does the game support mods and VR?+

Modding is confirmed but not present at launch; the developers state Workshop support, custom ships, scenarios, scenery and harbour editing are planned shortly after Early Access begins. VR has been raised repeatedly in the community but has not been announced as a supported feature, so do not buy on the assumption that headset support is coming.

Do I need a joystick or throttle to play?+

No, but hardware helps. The keyboard and mouse can drive everything, and the sim ships with a triple-layer keyboard layout so secondary panels stay reachable without leaving the bridge view. Gamepads and joysticks are supported, and a throttle and wheel setup maps well to the more than fifty assignable buttons and nine axes the developers expose.
